American Girls

“American girls are weather and noise, playing the changes for all of the boys…”

Aiden crooned the lyrics into the microphone, there was no trace of his Aussie accent, not while he sang at least. His band had been doing the acoustic cover of Counting Crow’s, American Girls for what seemed like ages now. It was one of their “crowd pleasers”.

He had honestly never understood the appeal of the song. He had met more than his fair share of American girls — tourists having a night out on the town — and none of them seemed particularly noteworthy… not in a positive sense anyway. Off the top of his head, he could count at least three other songs that specifically referenced American women, or girls.

It’s probably because they’re so fucking loud and obnoxious. He thought to himself. It was true too. It only took about two minutes, in a crowded room, to identify the Americans. You just had to listen for the voices that were cranked two volume levels louder than everyone else. His mouth curled into a microexpression of contempt.

That’s when he noticed her. She must have been hanging out close to the bar, which was out of his line of sight. He caught her, out of the corner of his eye, moving closer towards the stage. She was holding a mug full of suds. She weaved through the other bodies taking up space on the floor politely, but with a certain measure of confidence.

When she finally settled, front and center… If he hadn’t seen it with his own eyes, he would have thought it impossible for her to position herself there without courting the ire of the other patrons, or spilling her beer — she looked directly at him.

Those blue eyes of hers, sparked at him. He could see them clearly, even with the lights dimmed, and through the thick haze of smoke that filled the bar. She smiled. It wasn’t an overly flirtatious gesture. He didn’t get the sense that she was desperate for his affection, like some lovestruck groupie. It was a friendly, but coy smile. It read, I’m a good girl with some fun, bad habits I’d love to share with you… if you’re the right kind of guy.

“Oooohhhoooohhh yeah.”

He cooed the last lines of the song. They played the next song, and Blue Eyes swayed to the music. The movement of her hips had a sensual quality to it, but not your typical slutty spectacle. It was more reserved. It didn’t flaunt, it implied that she knew how to use her body to please — in a wonderfully understated way.

Towards the end of the song, she disappeared back into the mist.

The band finished their set. When they were done clearing their gear off the stage, he looked for her.

He got ambushed near the bar, by some attractive, but dull fangirls. The crowd began to thin out, and there was no sign of Blue Eyes. He tried to conceal his disappointment.

He put on his leather jacket, threw his guitar case over his shoulder, and made his way out of the bar. He turned the corner, into the parking lot… and smiled.

Blue Eyes was lounging on the hood of her car, reading a book. His footsteps got her attention. She closed the book, rolled to the side, and stood. He made his way over to her, trying to tone down his shit-eating-grin.

“Hello.” It wasn’t a clever line, but she was looking at him with those damn eyes; with that pretty face; in that cool-without-trying way.

“Hello, Stranger.” She said. There was that mischievous sparkle again. He almost didn’t notice her accent… American.

“Name’s Aiden.” He couldn’t stop staring at her.

“I’m Jen.” She added, “You look like you could use some coffee… and between the two of us…” She leaned in slightly, placing her mouth close to his ear, and whispered, “I have a wicked craving for a slice of pie.”

He found her playful demeanor totally irresistible. He was so distracted by her disarming personality…

It never occurred to him, that the next time he sang Counting Crow’s American Girls… he would probably mean every single word of it.
