What a fucking idiot.

I ate alone at a restaurant, because I like the background noise; the illusion of being social, without having to actually talk to anyone. There was a couple seated across from me. I try not to be rude, but I’m also criminally fascinated with strangers. I watched them, as they chewed their food in silence.

The way she looked at him… as if she never knew what to do with her eyes, until she met him. All of that love and admiration. The way he looked at her… like she wasn’t even there. She leaned forward slightly, towards him. He leaned back faintly, away from her. His head turned coyly, looking at every girl in the room, but the one who was with him.

It struck me as, well… insane. You have no idea how gorgeous she was. I mean, here’s this average looking guy, who is obviously ambivalent towards this beautiful girl. Meanwhile, everyone… including myself, is stealing glances at her.

She reaches across the table… like she’s willed all of her affection into her open palm, extending it out, to him. He doesn’t hesitate to move his hand, just out of her reach, as a pretty waitress walks by.

I lower my eyes, and stare at my plate. I can’t watch anymore. I think to myself, what a fucking idiot. Not about the guy. I’m irritated with the girl. I’m angry at her for looking so… satisfied; so grateful to be so in love with him, that she’s blinded to every slight, or rejection that he has to throw at her. Worse, she’s probably aware of it. She knows the type of man she’s in love with… she may even understand why he treats her the way he does…

I’m angry at her, because I remember what it was like… to be her.
