The Stars Just Blink For Us

We sat under the night sky, in that scorched field of dreams, gazing up at the stars. Well, I gazed. Your eyes just kind of glazed over, the way they always do when you’re stoned… high off the fumes of burning farm houses; intoxicated by the horrified screams of the locals. The sound usually made me giggle, but I’m was too enthralled by the lights above, to give the shrieks much notice. 

“I used to be into people, but now I think the stars just moved to the top of my list, of favorite things.” I said, mostly to myself. 

“Really?” You asked me, finally blinking back into consciousness. 

“Yeah, really.” I murmured, not bothering to look at you. 

“Honestly, I hate the stars. I wish they would all die.” You said, sounding a bit sulky and annoyed. 

“Since when?” I flashed you a curious glance.

“Since right now.” You pouted slightly. 

“Don’t tell me you’re jealous…” I couldn’t help but smirk, just faintly. 

“Maybe.” You laid back, avoiding my expression. 

I turned my attention back to the sky. My eyes glowed a bloody shade of red, the way they always do, when I want to make something happen. For a few moments, the stars twinkled. They flickered, like a billion flames in a strong breeze — until they completely fizzled out; all of them.

“I thought you said you like the stars.” You asked, but your voice was softer and sweeter.

“I do… ” I laid down beside you. ”But, not as much as I like making your wishes come true.” 

I couldn’t see you, in the pitch black, but I felt you smile.

I didn’t say it, but I was pretty sure that you remembered then… how much I loved you.
