Heavy Love

I died in a drowning accident. It was a still night, there were so many stars, but it was darker than most nights. The new moon was just a silver outline of a circle against black. Covered in sand after making love, my lover and I bathed ourselves in the sea. I felt playful, and wanted to see who could swim out the farthest. I forgot about the tide. The undertow sucked me down. My lover dove after me. Neither of us surfaced.

The water around us changed from the ocean to river. I sank down, towards the bottom of the Styx. My lover reaching out his hand, to grab me. But as he tried to pull us both up above the water, I become unnaturally heavy. As if I were tied to the bottom of death’s river, though he could still move freely.

He looked down at me; I looked up at him. He still had a chance. If he just swam up, and away from me. I fought to pry my hand from his grip, but he wouldn’t let go. Instead, he threw his arms around me, and we both began to sink deeper.

My flesh was starting to rot away. Still, he held me tighter. I stroked his cheek tenderly, looking him in the eyes as we made the slow descent down. I couldn’t speak, but he knew. It was wet, but he saw my tears; of love, gratitude, and guilt. All I had ever wanted was to be with him. For him to love, me wholehearted and sincerely… and he did. Enough to die with me.

“My love has concrete feet, my love’s an iron ball… I’m so heavy, heavy in your arms…”
