The part of me that’s you.

The skyline looked like the dawning of a new age, as the glow of the sun crept up the horizon. The last brief moment of twilight when you could only spy the backs of the shoes, worn by the straggler stars, stumbling over the threshold of the front door. Struggling to make it to their bed, and hide their head under the covers; trying to beat the first rays of the sun

“I can’t claim to be your soulmate.” I said, without looking up. My gaze reaching out, towards the sunrise. The light reflecting a twinkle of sincere emotion off the glassy quality of my eyes. “When I’m being totally honest with myself, I don’t think we were destined for that sort of perfect love…”

You grasped my hand. Maybe you were worried, or relieved, thinking I was going to end things. I heard you take a breath, as if you were going to agree, or contend, my speculation. I ran my fingers over the tops of your knuckles, and then weaved my fingers with your own; quick to continue my admission.

“I don’t think we’re mirror souls that were separated at the beginning of time. But, I do think that I was a small, but significant part of you that was severed, before you manifested in this world. Perhaps an ear, or an eye. Something that you could live without, but would always be aware of the absence. You couldn’t name it, but you knew that something was missing.

I learned how to exist without you. To evolve, adapt, and survive on my own, but always feeling as if I had been misplaced…

No. I don’t think we’re soulmates, but I suspect that I came from a part of you…”

I squeezed your hand lightly, finally looking up at you, as I moved my lips closer to yours. Tilting my head up as I whispered, before kissing you softly.

“Because, I may not always be sure that I really belong with you — not as if it’s written in the stars — but the way I feel about you makes me certain that I have, and always will, belong to you. “
